History:
http://dishonored.wikia.com/wiki/Emily_Kaldwin
Personality:
Emily Kaldwin is a woman pulled in two directions in her life. She is an empress of nations, a queen and ruler, but so strongly does she desire to do away with the bullshit of the Dunwallian Court and live a free life, the life always denied to her by her birth, her mother's death and subsequent kidnapping and ascension to the throne. Yet, her keen mind and intelligence keeps her rooted in place, knowing she would never be truly free.
Indeed, nothing was more impactful in Emily's life than the loss of her mother and subsequent involvement in the conspiracy to overthrow her legacy. The death of her mother scarred her deeply, leaving a pain she feels strongly, often causing her to be overcome with grief. Yet, with the assistance of her father, Corvo Attano, she has grown to live her own life, not just for the role she has to fill but for her sake, her father's sake, and her mother's sake.
Truly, her relationship with the rough and gruff Corvo shows the depths of the familial bond she shares with him. To her, a young woman who lost her mother as a child and almost lost her father, nothing is more important to her than her family. From her father, she gained a great many things. Training in free-running, assassination techniques (for her protection naturally), swordplay, gunplay as well as much more important things like his love, his guidance and a strong sense of morality. Emily's morality is firm and strong, often to the point of well meaning impulsiveness when she faced with a wrong.
This impulsiveness has caused many problems for her throughout her rule yet she is a firm believer that her rule is just. Whether hubris or simple ignorance is up for the player to decide through the gameplay; an Emily that forgoes killing realizes the depth of her ignorance of her actions and inaction and becomes a much wiser and more attentive ruler while an Emily who kills everyone that stands in her way ignores such revelations and becomes an iron fisted despot.
To be sure, the time serving at the Courts of Dunwall have shaped her as much as her father though in lesser ways. She has, with no small assistance from her father, become a studious and methodical woman, bearing a keen intelligence that lets her pick out options not yet seen by others. But still her heart stirs to be free from her 'gilded cage', from her responsiblities, the asskissers who say one thing and do another, the two faced hypocrites that kiss the feet of the Empress never seeing Emily Kaldwin. How fitting that one who hates hypocrisy is also victim to her own cognitive bias, her desires often leaving her empire neglected to fend for themselves when her desires are not aimed squarely at the various problems afflicting it.
When dealing with strangers, Emily will tend to default to her ingrained noble mask, keeping her words polite and the distance between her and others substaintial. Her experiences have yielded a cautious approach when it comes to meeting people. Dunwall doesn't abide by the trusting, leaving the wretches to die in a ditch from trusting the wrong chap and being the victim of two kidnappings and watching her mother die before her eyes certainly dissuades her from making easy trust. Its not uncommon for Emily to ask 'tit-for-tat' in many cases. Her help does not come cheap, unless someone appeals to her well meaning nature. After extended periods of conversation, the distance will lessen but not vanish until Emily has a feeling of complete trust in the people she's talking to, often gained by her looking into their backgrounds or just outright snooping on them personally. To those whom gained her trust, her mannerisms change. She gets close, often too close, and will frequently touch others in order to show her affection. Her words, way of speaking, the way she holds herself will change, her facade vanishing to a lonely young woman who truly desires to be close but also has a tendency to, at times, push people away to protect them from the dangers associated with being Empress of the Isles, the dangers she brings.
In the end, Emily is a strong well-meaning woman for whom family means everything, even remaining in a vipers' nest of a court when she so desires to leave it all behind, one way or another.

It was strange. That was the thought running through the head of Emily Kaldwin as she pulled the hood of her jacket over her head to protect her head from the pouring rain. A week ago, she never would have noticed the discrepancies, the subtle errors that wove into her every day life in this...Eddan. The murders, vastly greater in number and brutality than that of the Crown-Killer that haunted Dunwall's alleys. How no one ever came, no one ever left. How things were always stocked but no one ever remembered where or when they came in.The little ways things didn't mesh with how life in a city, even one as astounding as Eddan could be. “If only we had half the things that Eddan has...” she whispered to the cold and the wet night. She caught herself and shook her head. She couldn't afford to think of the past now. Doing that would just make her remember the city, remember Dunwall, the Empire, the coup and her fat-
Her mind fumed in helpless frustration as her fingers dug into the gloves covering her hands. Everything was taken from her before she had come here and Eddan took everything that was left. Her name, her past, her memories and gave her a new family, as if to try and make up for it. A cage she was unaware of, but a cage all the more insidious than Dunwall and Serkonos could ever dream to be. But, she didn't need to fear the cages anymore. She saw the cages for what they were and now that her eyes were clear, she was going to do what she should have before the coup. Emily Kaldwin was going to break out of the cage.
A smile came unbidden to her face as she came up to the gathering point. The time was close, midnight drawing nearer as her body thrummed with energy. Her heart beating faster, as if begging to be broken loose again. She bounced on her feet, waiting for the moment, waiting for the signal, for the ones who opposed her and then-
Everything changed and with only the thought of the cold marble face of her father, she freed her heart, freed herself. Emily buried her hand deep in her chest and out came the vengeful empress, the daughter of the assassin, the real Emily Kaldwin. In that second she died, she would swear she could see him, dark eyes deep as the midnight ocean and the leviathans that lived in them, looking down on her with intense curious desire. But then the battle was rejoined and she thought of it no more. And it brought a smile to her face.
